During the weekend I created, or should I say “burned”, a new feed at Feedburner, because I wanted to learn about the RSS/Atom feed traffic I am getting and the number of actual subscribers to the feeds out here.
Because this blog has been live for more than 2 years now (more on that in another post this week), I was assuming that I already had some subscribers. These had to be included in the new statistics. But, if I just created a new feed at Feedburner (actually a new redirect!), I would not have counted those old subscribers. So what to do?
All in all, it not became a real painful process, although I have been looking for maybe 1 1/2 hours to find a good tutorial.
The steps it involved:
- making new feed (from Atom it was adviced; I already did that)
- redirect every feed being hit at old URL’s to new one at Feedburner (you now, via those nice unreadable .htaccess files)
The results:
- Before the redirect: 5 subscribers (on new feed)
- After 12 hours : 85 subscribers
- After 36 hours: 91 subscribers
So there were approximately 86 existing subscribers to the original feeds on my blog and they are now nicely included in the stats!
Up to the 100st subscriber!
The current stats:

A couple of days ago I received my first comment spam. Does this mean I am important now?

Only one was really posted as a (draft) comment, but some spammers (from Haiti?) seem to have stopped trying after meeting the moderation message.
Comment spam will never see the light of day here!!

In my RSS reader, from the Textpattern blog I read that one of Textpattern’s developers gave birth to a very important extension of the content management software that also manages this weblog.
Well, I haven’t yet figured out what it all means, but if I am correct this new support functionality XML-RPC, according to TXP Magazine, will:
- make it possible to blog from a desktop client like Ecto
- increase the attractiveness of Textpattern as a platform (always a good thing!)
One good thing to add, which I found through the support forums, is the fact that new extensions might even come out of this, like the much asked for, but still missing “trackback” feature.

Yesterday evening I registered this web site as part of the TxP Blogmap, an initiative of TxP Magazine. It is a map showing the location of people running a Textpattern based blog. As I write this post, there are now 38 entries from 14 countries, of which three from the Netherlands. Quite nice after 2 days since the map was presented.
Since Google released its Google Maps API (application programming interface), the Internet has seen literally hundreds of applications using the Google maps in some interesting way. A good list of them can be found at Google Maps Mania.
The TxP Blogmap is essentially a TxP integrated version of the service delivered by Frappr.com. Using Frappr, a couple of months ago, I registered myself as one of the regular listeners of the For Immediate Release podcast on the Fir Frappr Map.
OK, but what is so nice about seeing the location of fellow users or listeners, you might ask? Good question!
I guess it depends whether you are the user or the provider. For the user it is just nice to see you are not alone using or listening and it gives you a sort of community feeling (“belonging to something”). For the provider, the maps are probably pretty good information on product distribution and demand. This could be beneficial in numerous ways, both in terms of business (e.g. advertising) as well as for improving the relationship with the users (location customised products?).

Ok, so here is another weblog, or blog, one of the 60+ billion already out there. Do not expect it to go for the A-, B- or even C-list soon, it being rather low profile and unfocussed for the moment.
The main reason for starting this blog, is my wish to communicate and converse with other like-minded people on a global scale. The last few years I have been getting more and more interested in developments on the Internet, while at the same time contemplating the influence this will have on our daily (working) lives. The ”Blogosphere”, that global online community of bloggers, appears to me as the perfect learning and discussion environment.
Of course, creating this blog, the technical part, has been very interesting and rewarding process itself. It has kept me busy, although rather infrequently, for the last 4 months. Yes, yes, I could have gone for one of those standard blogging tools, which have you up and running within 10 minutes. However, that would have prevented me really learning something new about the techniques involved, like for example backing up and restoring a MySQL database.
This blog’s maintenance is highly automated using the Textpattern system, which uses a MySQL database on the background. Setting it all up correctly involved only a short learning curve, mainly due to rather elaborate information on Textpattern, to be retrieved from the support forum and other user’s web sites.
So, what to expect from this blog? As for the posting frequency, please do not expect 10 new entries per day. I do have a normal day job as well as a private life! The most realistic target is several (3 to 4) updates a week.
As for content, you can expect blog posts on for example podcasting (reviews), social software, knowledge management, computer applications and web design, being my main topics of interests at this moment.
As for interactivity, readers are very welcome to react to blog entries using the comments link at the bottom of each blog post. Be aware that all comments will be moderated, eliminating the risk of not-very-nice entries (or spam) hitting the blog.
For those of you already so far ahead in using a feed aggregator, please be aware that this blog provides a full text feed both in the RSS and Atom format. I have also provided a link to my own blogroll in the online feedreader Bloglines.
Happy reading!
