Finally got Freeview Screen to accept my own movies

Sometimes you can be working for ages on stuff that does not work. Take the nice Freeview Screen in Second Life.

After the whole process of sharing the “equipment” (the screen) with the group of builders on Our Virtual Holland and getting the group’s officer to deed the stuff to the group, I have been quite busy trying to get one of my own movies played.

I uploaded a few test movies to my hosted server, but Freeview did not seem to accept them. Until I found out, I had been entering an incorrect URL format: unlike the on-screen help explains, I had to include the “http://” characters in order for the thing to work.

The second thing I learned, was about the format for the movie I wanted to stream. First I had used some online conversion tool to convert from .flv to .mov, but later I tried to more precisely specify the .mov format settings. I found out I could “hint” the file for streaming, which makes Freeview start displaying the movie while still downloading. I also found out I could compress the .mov format by using, in my case, h263 compression.

Some new stuff learned on a Saturday evening…

  1. Yes, the freeview screen is for free, but it takes some time to set-up. Especially on group-owned land where you need to deed it to the group (and you have to make sure it is the correct group, which makes a difference if you’re member of multiple groups and have got the incorrect group set to active) link it to a remote control etc.
Did you find the bookmarks not in the object? Here you can add/remove the bookmarks you can choose from. Saves you from typing them in again and again.

The only thing I think is missing is the option for others (not members of the group owning the TV) to switch between those bookmarked channels.

  2. I’m just starting to work out how to use the Freeview viewer.

I’ve been reading the information about what to do on group land, but my question is where do you enter the URL for the video?
I have skim read the script, but can’t find a place in there that looks as it that’s where you enter it.
Or, is it a case that once I have it in place & properly assigned to the group, I’ll get a set up menu when I can add the URL? (Which, I guess will make it much easier when i want to change the URL!)
