Introduction of voice in Second Life strongly divides residents

Today’s official news on the upcoming introduction of “voice” in Second Life was met with very mixed and strong reactions among residents.

I really enjoyed reading the different posts (e.g. here or here) all around Second Life related blogosphere. Especially because they offer a rare insight and understanding of the culture(s) and the values of different groups out in Second Life.

If you can spare some time, be sure to check out the comments on the official blog post on the Second Life weblog.

As far as I can tell, I see three types of reactions:

  • I love it, because it helps in communication, education etc.
  • I love it, but please fix more severe technical GRID issues first
  • I hate it, it will create a division between groups of residents and will result in groups becoming “second class” for not wanting to use voice (non-English speakers; deaf people; people who play the other sex, another species or a different age; people who just like the anonymity)

Well, I must say that my initial positivism around a voice feature, is being replaced by a “let’s wait and see stance”, especially regarding the current cultural divide potentially increasing.

Let’s wait and see.
