Serendipity in Second Life: my experience today

Today I was revisiting the Crayonville location in Second Life, after yesterday’s great party for the launch of Crayon.

Actually there were not so many people around, but I did happen to run into Niall Cook from Hill & Knowlton. After exchanging a few words on Crayon and Crayonville, Niall revealed that he is working on a book on “social software use in enterprises”. Actually he has just started and what is very interesting is that he is blogging the writing process.

After discussing my line of work, Niall also pointed at another of his projects called Cogenz. To quote from the website:

Cogenz is a social bookmarking service currently in development, that will enable companies to harness the collective intelligence of their employees.

Sounds quite interesting. As they are still looking for companies willing to beta-test, I will try to convince some people at work…

All in all it is very nice and interesting to meet people like Niall Cook in Second Life. And there are many more interesting people wandering around! I think this accidental or serendipital meeting of like-minded people visiting places that interest them, is one of the greatest values of Second Life. Ok, you can have that through blogs and forums as well, but this 3D world just adds a dimension, a special feeling you do not get though other media, well at least that is how I felt today.

What do you think?

  1. I completely agree, Marcel. I find it fascinating that whenever you get talking to people in Second Life, the questions you ask (well at least the questions I ask) are designed to find out who they are in REAL life. Glad I bumped into you – as a result of this post I have found and subscribed to your blog.

  2. Hi Niall,

Thanks for stopping by here! And good to hear you agree on this particular value of Second Life.

By the way, did you contact Rod Boothby by any chance to talk about the books you both are writing? I am very curious what angle both books are taking on the Enterprise 2.0 theme.

    Best regards,

    Marcel

  3. I haven’t made contact with Rod about this yet, but fully intend to.
