Social software adoption strategy

In January of this year I wrote a blog post about the adoption of wiki’s, which currently is one of my main interests, being involved in two wiki projects at work.

Therefore I was thrilled to learn that Socialtext, the world’s first wiki company, released a very nice article written by Suw Charman describing an adoption strategy for the introduction of social software (like blogs and wiki’s). Ross Mayfield, Socialtext’s founder also blogged about it.
The article is very well written and provides a nice glance into Socialtext’s kitchen. After all, they live of this practical advice given to companies!

The article clearly outlines some steps that one might tend to forget, when perhaps focussing too much on the tools in stead of the users.

The basic structure of the adoption strategy may be presented like:

  • Identify the key user group
  • Identify and understand key users
  • Convert key users to evangelists
  • Turn the evangelist into trainers
  • Support bottom-up adoption and new uses of the tool

There is also specific attention for the important step of getting management support and for what is subsequently expected from management (e.g. lead by example, communicating business benefits).

All in all a very nice piece of reference material that will find it’s use in dozens of enterprises, where grassroots innovators and believers are struggling to get the new tools accepted.
